Do You Ever Grow More Food Than Your Household Can Consume?

Would you like an easy and efficient way to donate your surplus produce to help feed the hungry?

COMMUNITY ROOTS CAN HELP!

During the growing season, Roots Volunteers pick-up surplus produce from back yard gardens, farmer's markets, and our town's first Community Garden for delivery at soup kitchens, food banks, and transitional homes. Our facility partnerships have enabled us to create a donation schedule that ensures day-to-day deliveries are made at the soup kitchens, transitional homes, and food banks that are equipped to utilize your fresh produce for feeding the hungry.

Since the program started in 2007, Community Roots Volunteers have delivered over 7,000 lbs. of fruits and vegetables to food assistance facilities.

Community Roots Purpose:

  • To increase local produce donations at food assistance facilities.
  • To develop a local food system that plays a role in reducing green house gases.
  • To promote healthy eating habits.
  • To establish a stronger more sustainable community.

shared harvest logo-colorOver the long winter months of 08' and 09', we have been working closely with a group of neighbors in Coeur d'Alene's Garden District to plan for our town's first Community Garden -- "Shared Harvest."

This one-of-a-kind garden opened April 25th, 2009 and is located on the corner of 10th and Foster Ave in Coeur d'Alene's downtown Garden District. The garden sits on 3 city lots and houses over 50 rental plots. Community Roots volunteers will be tending a large plot at the garden and will be donating all of the food that is grown at our plot to local food assistance facilities. Later in the season, the program will also be utilizing the garden as a drop spot for rural and city gardeners who wish to donate their surplus produce.

Donations are accepted at the Garden on the following days:

Wednesday      5:30 - 7:30 PM

Sunday           12:00 - 2:00 PM
