About Community Roots
The Community Roots Program started out as most ideas do, through a good talk with a close friend.
The Community Roots Program started out as most ideas do, through a good talk with a close friend. Our discussion was about the basic shared needs of all humans and the undeniable relationship that those needs have with the environment and our natural resources.
My first produce donation at a local soup kitchen didn’t start out as service-minded as one might think. Being the amateur gardener that I am, I quickly discovered how a couple of seeds could transform quickly into 5 bazillion zucchinis. After numerous phone calls and a trip across town, I was finally able to find a food assistance facility that could utilize my extra zucchinis while they were still fresh. This experience motivated me to create a pick-up and delivery service that makes the act of donating surplus produce quick and easy.
The development of the Community Roots Program has been a natural progression involving all walks of life such as local business owners, small organic farmers, backyard gardeners, and soup kitchen chefs. The program started in Coeur d’Alene and is now ready to reach out to nearby neighborhoods and towns to develop self-sufficient charitable food systems that reduces the need for motorized transportation, and fosters discussion on the shared social, environmental, and economic interest in localizing our food supply.
