Roots at the Shared Harvest Garden

Roots partnership with Shared Harvest

GardenRoots Local Food Share aims to reconnect people with the land that feeds them through building a charitable local food system.  The Shared Harvest Community Garden endeavors to provide a space for people to grow, learn, and give back to their community.  The partnership of these two produce-oriented programs blossomed from the beginning. Shared Harvest plot owners donate their surplus fruits and vegetables to The Roots Local Food Share on weekly drop-off days at the garden.

In the southwest corner of the garden is The Roots Vegetable Plot where volunteers grow food primarily for charitable donation. Many newcomers to gardening have learned the ropes in the Roots where it also serves as an outdoor classroom for people of all ages.

Roots ShedIn the summer of 2009, the Roots shed was built at the Garden. This effort was accomplished through substantial support from KEA members, the Shared Harvest Garden, and The Art Spirit Gallery.  The shed is constructed almost entirely of reclaimed materials, congruent with the environmentally sustainable principles of the program.  The shed is an extremely important asset to the Roots Local Food Share Program because it serves as a coordination point for volunteers and a physical drop point for neighborhood gardeners who have extra produce to donate.

To the side of the shed is a small area where the Roots bicycle carts are stored.  Volunteers attach these carts to their bicycles for trips to and from the farmers market, and to deliver produce to local food assistance facilities.
