NOTED ECOLOGIST TO PRESENT AT KOOTENAI ENVIRONMENTAL ALLIANCE MEETING
Kootenai Environmental Alliance (KEA) is privileged to have George Wuerthner, Projects Director for the Foundation for Deep Ecology, present at a special KEA noon meeting on Thursday, May 14, at the Iron Horse Restaurant, 407 Sherman in downtown Coeur d'Alene.
His topic will be “Rethinking Fire and Forest Health.”
Mr. Wuerthner is a nationally renowned ecologist, photographer and author who has published 34 books including North Idaho Lake Country, Idaho Mountain Ranges as well as Wildfire: A Century of Failed Forest Policy.
According to Mr. Wuerthner, “There’s an old cliché that one can’t see the forest for the trees. It is used to describe people who are so focused on some detail that they fail to see the big picture. Nowhere is this failure to see the forest for the trees more evident than the rush to utilize dead trees for biomass fuels and/or the presumed need to “thin” forests to reduce so called “dangers” and/or “damage” from wildfire and beetle outbreaks.”
Wuerthner studied wildlife biology and botany at the University of Montana, and did graduate work at Montana State University (Range Science), University of California Santa Cruz (Science Communication), and University of Oregon (Geography).
