Neighborhood Associations

Neighbors are joining together to form neighborhood associations and these neighborhood associations are working together to address the rapid growth. A unified voice is forming.

The rapid and aggressive growth occurring in Kootenai County and the municipalities in the county has raised many concerns by the general public. The proposed developments are no longer reasonable in size, but number in the hundreds over large acreage that has been rural for many years. People are asking "What is happening to this very special place?"

Neighbors are joining together to form neighborhood associations and these neighborhood associations are working together to address the rapid growth. A unified voice is forming. Below are the neighborhood associations that are active.

If you are concerned about the growth that is taking place throughout the Kootenai County, contact a group that is close to you and help!

Bayview Community Council

Contact:
Jeanne Hom

The Bayview Community Council formed to promote the sustainability of our community and for the welfare of its residents, now and in the future. The Bayview Community Council's philosophy is based on democratic principles and to foster tolerance and respect for individual opinion. All meetings are open to the public and there is no cost to become a member. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 7PM at the Bayview Community Center.

Cedar Mountain Association

Contact:

The Cedar Mountain Association formed around the Riverside Development Company's proposed 1600 home development on the former 900 acre Rickel Ranch near Athol, which was ultimately denied. The area is rural, and members of the association organized to prevent their neighborhood from losing its rural character. They are not interested in having rural sprawl define their area.

Coalition for Positive Rural Impact at Rockford Bay and Loft's Bay

Contact:
Jai Nelson

This association was formed over the concern of the Black Rock expansion on the west side of Coeur d'Alene Lake. The association is also concerned with excessive water requests by developers, and protested the application by Black Rock for additional water for their expansion. The area on the west side of Coeur d'Alene Lake is rural, and most residents would prefer it remain as such.

Development on the Rathdrum Prairie, specifically approximately 700 plus homes on 250 acres, is the concern of this group. The prairie is disappearing at an alarming rate as agricultural is replaced by subdivision after subdivision.

East of Hayden Citizens

Contact:
Brad and Josie Ehrlich

The area east of Hayden Lake is a very rural area, which this group would like to maintain. Tall Pines, a proposed development, would double the current population, as well as alter the landscape and affect the quality of the lake.

Friends of Hayden

Contact:
Phil Clements

Friends of Hayden was formed in response to a proposed development north of Hayden and in a semi-rural area with lots that range in area from one-third acre to ten acres. Recently many people have joined our group in response to development that threatens neighborhoods with significant increases in traffic in residential areas.

Hayden Lake Protective Association

Contact:
Merlyn Duerksen
Paul Leonard

Hayden Lake Protective Association was formed in response to the proposed development of the old McCall property, now referenced as the Timber Creek development, but the mission statement of HLPA goes beyond any single development on Hayden Lake. Our primary concerns are water quality, safety, and long term quality of use of Hayden Lake and therefore any developments that are in conflict with these goals will merit our scrutiny and if necessary our activism in demanding compliance with environmental regulations and county ordinances. We will work with other organizations that share our goals for protecting Hayden Lake but we do not hold regular meetings. Our mailing address is: P.O. Box 1973, Hayden, 83835, or contact us via e-mail.

Residents living south of Coeur d'Alene near Mica Flats and Kidd Island wishing to preserve the rural character of their neighborhood formed to keep tabs on all the development in the area that might change the character of open fields, small farms and waterfront homes to one of rural sprawl. Mica Kidd Island Property Owners Association is a membership association actively participating in the process of updating the Comprehensive Plan for Kootenai County.

Mica Flats Grange Rural Issues Committee

Contact:
Ann Seddon

The Mica Flats Grange continues the traditional role of the Grange -- a lobby group to help rural America. The Rural Issues Committee is dedicated to being involved in issues that hamper the existence of rural communities, such as urban sprawl in the rural area.
