The Hayden Lake Project

A Documentary Film Written and Produced by Karen Hayes
Copies of “The Hayden Lake Project”, the DVD documentary regarding the perilous state of water quality in Hayden Lake, are available at KEA for $15.00.
Hayden Lake has been officially listed as an “impaired waterbody” because it does not meet the state’s water quality standards for Total Phosphorous. This excess nutrient loading effects cold water aquatic life by reducing the amount of dissolved oxygen available.
Where are we falling short?
Although the Hayden Lake Watershed Association has begun to write a restoration plan, the State of Idaho and its "designated agencies" are responsible for implementing the plan. What can the State of Idaho be doing to prevent further degradation of Hayden Lake in the interim? Enforcing existing regulations, strengthening storm water protections, and tighter regulation of septic systems around the Lake come to mind. But we do need to make progress. Consider contacting DEQ, the lead State agency, with your concerns and suggestions and let them know that restoration of Hayden Lake is a priority to you.
What you can do to help restore Hayden Lake:
- Protect our streams
- Let zero phosphates leave your property
- Properly dispose of pet droppings
- Compost livestock manure
- Use low-maintenance, native landscape plants
- Use paddle and win power to play
- Haul away ashes
- Use
phosphorous-free detergents
- Protect and cherish wetlands
- Be a watershed watchdog
- Vote: Hold elected officials accountable.
- Become a member of the Kootenai Environmental Alliance
