The issues the Lake Coeur d’Alene watershed is experiencing are still urgent. A recent study by the National Academy of Sciences indicates that some elements that threaten our water quality have trended upwards in the past 5 years, and still, Coeur d'Alene Lake is among the most contaminated in the United States.  Efforts by the EPA, DEQ and CDA Tribe (and others) have improved the Lake tremendously since the 1980's, but the work continues.

Millions of tons of mine tailings that contain lead, arsenic and other heavy metals, are in the sediment at the bottom of the lake.  If oxygen levels in the lake continue to drop, these toxic metals can rise from the sediment and re-suspend in the lake, which would be disastrous.

We can help prevent this disaster by educating newcomers and landowners about reducing phosphate pollution and improving development plans. We can expand our outreach efforts and activities by hiring a full-time Lake Coeur d’Alene Waterkeeper. We need to act now to keep the lake drinkable, swimmable and fishable. To make that happen, KEA needs more support.
